Feature Article - An introduction to TPM

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a concept for maintaining plants and equipment. The goal of the TPM program is to markedly increase production while, at the same time, increasing employee morale and job satisfaction. This article, contributed by Venkat J, offers an introduction to the concepts of TPM. You will find the article at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/tpm_intro.shtml.

Feature Article - General Aviation Maintenance-Related Accidents report

This report, issued by the Office of Aerospace Medicine within the Federal Aviation Administration in the USA, analyzes 10 years of National Transportation Safety Board data. Its primary conclusion was that installation errors were the leading cause of maintenance-related general aviation accidents. Are there lessons that can be learnt for general industry? Read this article at
http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/GA-maintenance-related-accident-review.pdf to find out. Note that you will require the free Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to view this file.

Feature Article - MCM : A New Technology in Predictive Maintenance

MCM (Motor Condition Monitor) is a device that has the capability of detecting impending mechanical and electrical failures in motors and motor based systems at the early stages of fault development. The experimental modelling technology used in MCM can automate fault detection and prevent unplanned machine failures. The paper describes the technology and presents the results of experiments that were done to prove the capability of the MCM device in fault detection. It can be read at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/mcm_intro.shtml.

Feature Article - How Unbalance Affects Bearing Life

This short paper, from Ahmed M. Al-Abdan, does exactly what it says - describes how unbalance affects bearing life. It can be read at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/unbalance.shtml.

Book Review - Zero Breakdown Strategies

This book is an interesting contribution to the maintenance field, and would be of interest both to those who are embarking on a Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) program within their organization, as well those who are looking to move beyond Failure Prevention and Prediction, and towards Failure Elimination. On the Lighter Side - Engineering Humor

A promising young NASA aerospace engineer was killed in a horrific car accident and arrived in Heaven, protesting to St. Peter at the pearly gates. "St. Peter, I'm only 35. I'm much too young to die. I have a wonderful wife and family, so much to live for. Why in the world am I here?"

St. Peter looked through a huge stack of papers, looked over the top of his glasses and said, "Well, according to all of these hours on your time sheets, you've got to be at least 108."
