Feature Article - Creating a Successful Corporate Maintenance CouncilMost large, multi-plant companies have launched corporate "Maintenance Councils" in the past decade. While some have achieved a significant success, most are still floundering for direction and concrete results. In this article from Bradley Petersen of SAMI, he explains the differences that lead to success. You will find this article at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/CorporateMaintenanceCouncil.pdf. Note that you will require the free Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to view this file. Feature Article - Predict Future FailuresCrow/AMSAA reliability growth plots use failure information from maintenance systems to
provide a visual tool, with straight-line graphs, for predicting the next failure in systems where humans can
influence the results. C/A plots work well with single failure or mixed failure modes. In this article, Paul Barringer from Barringer & Associates explains how the simple log-log plots
have easily calculated statistics to show if failures are increasing, decreasing, or exhibiting no-change in failure
rates. You can read it at Feature Article - The Mystery of the Lean ToolboxMany of today's Lean Manufacturing teachers, consultants, workshops, publications, and initiatives describe a Lean Toolbox. This toolbox contains the various improvement "tools" that have become part of the Lean Manufacturing initiative. Robert M. Williamson, president of Strategic Work Systems describes what is in these lean toolboxes in his article at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/LeanToolbox.shtml. Feature Article - Fieldbus Device Maintenance - Do I Need to Go to the Field Anymore? The fieldbus era has ushered in a whole new approach to configuring, diagnosing and maintaining a plant's field devices. Field device information that used to require a trip to the field is now available remotely over the fieldbus. This paper, written by Alan R. Dewey of Emerson Process Management explores the impact that this change will have on the role of the plant engineering and maintenance staff. The article can be read at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/fieldbus_maintenance.pdf. You will require the free Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to view this file. 2004 CMMS Implementation Benchmarking SurveyOur latest survey is on CMMS implementation. Another short survey that should not take too long to complete. You can complete the survey, and view the results to date, at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/survey.shtml. The survey will remain open until July 15, 2004, and full results will be published in our August newsletter. Maintenance Management Benchmarking Survey ResultsOur Maintenance Management Benchmarking Survey closed on May 15, with responses from 183 people - a great response, thank you. We are currently analysing the results, and the full results will be published in our June newsletter. For those who wish to see the unanalysed results, visit http://www.plant-maintenance.com/cgi-bin/survey_benchmark.cgi?action=VIEW&filebase=benchmark_survey. Recommended BooksHere are ten Maintenance-related books that we have reviewed recently, and strongly recommend:
Get more information on these and other books at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/maintenance_books.shtml. On the Lighter Side - Engineering HumorYugo Nakamura has just finished the digital clock he has been working on for 4 years. Go to this site to see the results: http://www.lares.dti.ne.jp/%7Eyugo/storage/monocrafts_ver3/03/index.html [Link broken, unfortunately] This is a real clock, and it's pretty cool.
I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter. All feedback, comments and contributions to future editions are very welcome (as are enquiries about contributions to, and sponsorship of, this newsletter). Alexander (Sandy) Dunn
